My mother had no choice when she was arranged married to my father at just eighteen years old. She was never able to earn more than an associates degree. She always tells me that if she valued education more as a teenager, her life would have been quite different. The same can be said of many women in South Asia, who are taught to be good wives and not good students. They are taught to be educated enough to look good on paper, but not so educated that they question the society that brought them up and keeps them enslaved.
